Labor leadership spill – why did the right support a left leader?

It’s been a tumultuous week for the Labor party with rumours that Mike Rann would step down coming to fruition this week, when he announced he would hand the leadership of the party to the left faction’s Jay Weatherall.

But with talk of the leadership change being initiated by the right faction of the party, why is it that they decided to support a left faction candidate?
