Amid rumblings from employer groups and hits from Tony Abbott about bringing back individual contracts, unions went on the front foot today, launching the results of the largest survey ever conducted of Australian workers. And it had some scary statistics.

• 61% said they work more hours than they’re paid for, yet nearly half get no compensation for those extra hours

• 73% are regularly contacted outside of work hours about their job.

And we lead the world when it comes to casual jobs with no job security.

ACTU President Ged Kearney said in her address to the National Press Club today that “work is bleeding into the rest of our lives”.

She told Catherine Zengerer about the union movement’s plan to launch a national campaign for job security.
